STUDY: ERGO PROXY - Backgrounds
In the first one I didn't draw the toilet because it was clearly a 3D model, so I would probably have to gather a picture of a toilet to get a similar effect... and I am not that desperate :P
The second one I just slapped on that character and merged the layers before I noticed it looked like crap. Ergo Proxy is a cool show, but man..when you study those backgrounds they are out of focus, overexposed tricks. It certainly wouldn't hold up as art on it's own I think but it really works with the story. I've learned quite a bit copying these backgrounds (poor as my attempts may be).
Main tools used:
- Radial Gradient
- Very soft brush at 4% (for the bed and highlights on that metal table.
- Texture for the wall in the bathroom
- Lots of shape drawing with the lassoo tool and >Gaussian blur.

STUDY #2: Seven Samurai - Akira Kurosawa
I decided to go about these studies a bit differently..because I am not a painter, and neither do I have any ambition to be one. So I decided to do line drawings of the movies I study in my own style, and then paint the value study or color study underneath that layer. Copying work otherwise is just boring and I'd be giving it up soon enough.
So I picked 2 shots of the first half of the movie, both character based:
#1: There is great despair in the village, but Kikuchiyo (Toshiro Mifune) managed to get the entire village in a laugh. I love his character a lot, but I chose thos shot because the laughs seemed to genuine and seeing these old ladies crack up really put a smile on my face:
#2: The farmers in general make me laugh, they are cowardly, weak, whiny excuses of men. This shot they really looked like a dog that has done something wrong and they know it...Anyway, on to part 2! :P

STUDY #1: Assault Girls Movie
Alright,
After a series of bad sketches, it's time to hit the study desk again. Fortunately I am bad at a lot of stuff so it will be easy to pick out something to work at ;) I'm pretty bad with color, and I want to improve composition. Since I also love watching movies, I'll combine both in a series of studies.
1: I took a still and tried to pick the color by hand in Photoshop (not trying to reproduce the still, but gain more knowledge about color and tone).
The movie I picked is "Assault Girls", yeah..if you check out the trailer you can gauge how bad it is. But it is directed by Mamoru Oshii who directed some of my favourite anime movies (Ghost in the Shell 2 and Patlabor 1 and 2) so I had to just watch it! It's hard to believe he'd be directing something that looks like a poor live action cutscene for a game. Still...there is lots of quality to be found, it also doesn't take itself seriously (thank god), and I really enjoyed a couple of moments in this film.
Anyway, you can see below how poor a job I did picking colors. I'll probably also sketch in the characters before I start blocking characters because it looks like a drawing of a 5 year old :D

And of course the trailer:
2 for the price of one
2 sketches this time, one in the sketchbook and in in photoshop. Both uninspired, I will go back to studies and probably also do some more finished work with an actual concept behind it.
EDIT, My buddy Simon did his rendition of my sketch! Check out his blog on: http://mrmongs.blogspot.ie/

Relax....
You can see from the work in progress sketches that I changed the drawing a lot. I think the thumbnail still looks best :( But anyway here's another doodle. Will be stopping these shortly I think, it's fun to do but I prefer to do studies or work on a project.

More sketching!
So, I made a sketch for an ex colleague. He asked me to draw him as a Warlock/Wizard/King and he also likes unicorns. So here are 2 sketches, might do a finished drawing of this at some stage.
