Anyway, I'm trying to be kinder to myself when I draw/ink on paper. It's not something I do very often, and it is just a DIFFERENT SKILL to drawing on a computer. It's definitely a lot less forgiving, but more enjoyable I find. I would like to get to the point of being comfortable enough to draw a full comic on paper, but it'll be a long term plan :P

Learning how to INK! Breakdown

 So, I've been wanting to learn how to ink for a while and I figure the best way to learn a skill is by copying artists you love. So you don't need worry about what to draw, and you can just focus on trying to break down the "How". Obviously this involves a lot of sucking, but that's the fun part! 

1) These are my tools: A 2B pencil for sketching, a god quality nib pen, and a sharpie (I want to use a brush, but I'm not ready yet :P)

2) Start with the loose sketch and flesh it out. The quality of the drawing is not so important as it's just practice. In fact it probably feels less precious if it's a bad drawing :P

3) Then using the pen nib I draw the linear, leaving blacks and thick strokes to be done with the brush (in my case a Sharpie).

4) Finish it off with the sharpie and erase the pencil marks! Now my plan is to do this every morning for 50 days and hope I a better at the end of it :P

Gran Character Inks

 It's always a bad idea to ink a terrible sketch, but I didn't it anyway and it turned out better than I thought :P

So I worked the same as in my Daredevil Study

1 - Just ink the thin lines with a nib. One thing I heard about the greats is that they keep drawing in inks. So instead of tracing, keep working pin your drawing. It's scary to make a mistake perhaps? But I think in the long run it will make you more confident.

2: Get out the brush and add some line weight and black fills.

3 : Set the timer (15 mins) and let it cook before erasing your pencils :D

Copying is a great way to learn how to use tools.

1. This is Marc Silvestri's storm. Done with a pen nib.

2. This is a Storm by John Byrne. Also copied with a nib pen.

Then I tried to use a brush instead, although I have a poor quality brush.

More John Buscema, terrible inking, but one has to learn somehow :P

 So this time I used an inknib which is great for detail..but I failed on the tonal pass, it's too even with no clear focal point. Will try to abstract it a bit better on the next one. 

INK 1 : ALIENS

 I wanted to try and do another series of film stills with ink to study composition and lighting. 
This was an extremely lazy effort on my behalf to start of :P It's from James Camerons' ALIENS. 

Now that the bar is set low, let's try again tomorrow :)
