ROUGH RUN
STEP1 : This is just getting the general timing and legs to work, in the next pass I'll start thinking about hip/torso rotation, arms and heads. Gotta start somewhere!
STEP 2:
Ready for clean up now I think!

STUDY: MICKEY SHORTS by Mercury RUNCYCLE
Since I am working on a runcycle, I figured I might look at a runcycle on the excellent Mickey Shorts done by Mercury.
The original episode is HERE. (Bad Ear Day)
Here's just some notes :
The siderun is easy to break down since the keys are really clear (it is animated on 1's)
Start with 01 for the highest position (then flipped in 07), the other key is 04 which is the squash and 'passing position'. These then have 2 inbetweens each, which can be a bit awkward, I would say 02 favours 01 and 05 favours 04.
The frontrun seemed to have been done on 2's, with 5 drawings per step, while the siderun has 6 per step. The arms just kind of swing from one side to the other when the foot changes, which I assume is to keep a clear silhouette and balance out the figure.

Pencil Mileage
It feels like years since I last drew something more than a scribble, here's a little idea I had to celebrate the fact that the show we've been working on is going to air on Monday. The cute girl crucified is Nella the Princess knight in a Dave- makeover.

RUNCYCLE ..again
Alright alright,
Last couple of pieces of animation have been rubbish, why stop there? :)
This week I will try and animate a runcycle for that JODIE RIG. Trying to do this one is space instead of on the spot, 8 drawings per step, not flipped.
First quick doodle :

Week 1: Chair
So, this was my second challenge this week, which was to learn how to draw my desk chair in 3d space and also to clean it up in toonboom. I used the pencil with smoothing turned up to assist me draw straighter lines :P
These are without reference of course:

Week 1: Gumball
Sometimes during break I just doodle from memory, last week I decided to draw a bit from Gumball on a few occasions and at the end of the week, doodle the character without reference to see if I could sort of draw him... as you can see, I didn't do a good job :P
I will try and do the same for Gertrude from I hate Fairyland by Skottie Young!

Chair 3
Drew this chair again from memory..it's looking better at least :P One thing I notice is that I put my vanishing points too close to the object, so something I'll keep in mind next round. I'd like to cartoonify it a bit and maybe do a turnaround.
Did another chair a bit looser:

Gumball Board Study
Did some more thumbnails of this sequence. I learned one thing, watch a sequence first before you analyse it! This sequence is not really very adventurous, very tame camera angles and poses. I guess part of it is the limitation of Flash..
Below for example on the right there's a shot of the kitchen, evil dream gumball jumps on the table to smack the flies but gets kicked in the head by the lamp. The set up is almost like a videogame 2d platform scroller, no use of depth. (that's good use of small budget right there :P )

Gumball Board Study
Trying to keep focussed on boards, quick little sequence from Gumball. Trying to put words along with the thumbnail studies now, just to make myself think about why the camera is where it is, why a cut happens, what the composition means etc...
First part (5 panels) is not so interesting since they fall from pitch black into nothingness, the camera doesn't do anything, the acting is all in the characters body and face expressions.
They them come out form beneath a bed, this is a wide shot to show how tiny they are. Also a shot form the top to show how vulnerable they are.
Cut to a medium shot for acting and to show the looming danger coming their way.
Cut to a wide shot at an angle, this is an action shot, so the angle is to make it more exciting and dynamic, they fly off towards camera for the next cut.

Very exciting stuff....I am drawing a chair! Ha...I want to draw a layout to go with the rig I'm working on, but I want to start by drawing a prop like a chair to get me started. This is the real chair.
