Started doing some expressions:

And changed my mind on my previous post, we DO need a side view! :D

I always like posting work in progress, it's weird but if I don't post on my blog I feel like I'm not doing anything. It's a way to track my productivity I guess.

I drew up a backview, and 2 more poses to pose out with the rig. There's something funny to me about sideviews in turnarounds. We NEVER use them, pretty much on any show I worked why draw a sideview? That's why I am trying out to a Quarter View / Side View Hybrid instead.

Some while ago I created a rig for a cartoon character inspired by the Mickey Shorts, the idea is to be able to do some cartoony animation at home since the show we currently work on is not really cartoony.

Jodie did some clean up on top of my original design, which I finally cleaned up and built in toonboom:

Below are some sketches in Photoshop

Toonboom Sketches

Some digital sketches I did in between animating at work, sometimes when the attention slips it's better to draw something, I think it re-engages my mind so I can focus better.

These days I try and draw on whatver I can find:

The empty spaces on my daily peanuts desk calendar:

My timesheet:

The back of some printed paper:
I don't get the chance to work at night at the moment, but I try and doodle whenever I can, just keep up the habit until I free up some time again.

Some experimenting

Working on top of some thumbnails I did for an idea. No idea where I am going with this yet in terms of look, but I wanted to try out some charcoal and paint combination with touch ups for the light in Photoshop.

Creature ideas for a small animated project

And some random doodles from the same page:

Stumbled on these pictures of my old desk at Boulder Media (Dublin):

This was the wall on my left where I hung up the art from my friends who did art trades with me.

And then my home office, I was living in a studio working on a small kitchen table. I miss the simplicity of those days. I almost pasted all my walls in there with artwork from anatomy studies to life drawing, sketches, watercolors, they are somewhere in the cupboard :/

Motoko Kusanagi RUNCYCLE COLOR

Motoko Kusanagi RUNCYCLE Finished

This is a run on 2's (8 drawings), not sure if I will clean it up or not. The aim of doing this is to learn, so cleaning things up takes quite a while and is not really that useful I think.

Completed the arms and torso and animated some hair. Ready to take this to the next phase. SO far it's still on 2's, not sure if I will inbetween or not, might instead try to paint in some shadows which is easier on 8 frames vs 16 :P

So now that I have a design (sort of..) I am going over with a cleaner pass. Really makes me realise I need to strengthen my drawing again to really pull this off properly, but...done is better than overworking stuff, so let's put in another hour on this :)

I have just copy pasted the face for now, I will add the hair movement/ tilts and slight sideways movement after I completed the rough pass. I also left out the armor on her torso to deal with afterwards.

New Design Runcycle

Too late in the game to re-design what I started with? Naaah....It's hard to find reference for this particular outfit, but it's from the chase sequence in the original Ghost in the Shell movie. I like the colors for this one.

I actually skipped a step.... the most important one :/ I normally do a gesture roug, not caring about being on model, just being loose and almost straight ahead. Here's a very faulted first few rough keys, time for the troubleshooting to start :)

I could change my mind on the design for all eternity, but just have to stick to something :P
tried finding a blend between the original anime film by Oshii and the original manga design.

Let's start the ball rolling, I always start off with a guide of the character in simple shapes, next will be the key pose and then a rough anim.
